CULTURAL DIVERSITY TRAINING

Cultural diversity training encompasses seminars, presentations and small group activities focused on raising awareness of different cultures and ways of living. It increases knowledge about people from different backgrounds, such as socioeconomic, gender, racial, ethnic and sexual orientation
As social workers and other health care providers interact with people dealing with life-limiting conditions, issues of culture and  communication across cultural boundaries becomes critically important.

Cultural diversity is important because our country, workplaces, and schools increasingly consist of various cultural, racial, and ethnic groups. We can learn from one another, but first we must have a level of understanding about each other in order to facilitate collaboration and cooperation

Our mission is to provide a  practical approach to cultural competence, through sessions  that  will guide interventions for Teachers, Social Workers, Mental health professionals, and Nurses,  working with diverse clients, families, and communities.

“Different roads sometimes lead to the same castle.”
― George R.R. Martin,
A Game of Thrones

Conflict Prevention and Resolution Conflict is inevitable in any organization. Cultural diversity training helps lessen the occurrence of conflicts and prevent them where possible by encouraging an open-door communication policy between all levels of stakeholders within an organization. Employees should feel free to discuss success and potential challenges with their managers; at the same time, patients should understand that they can approach health care professionals with their concerns, even if those concerns are specific to an identity characteristic. For example, a patient may have an issue relating to old age or to his sexuality. That patient ought to be able to raise these issues to health care professionals even if those professionals come from different backgrounds. Cultural diversity training increases empathy and opens doors to more honest communication.

WHY  WORK US

Does  your organization  work with diverse communities?  If you answered yes, than cultural competence training  is an issue that you should be thinking about.

As your Organizational Advocate  we are  hired by organizations to assist them in finding new ways to improve their awareness regarding  cultural diversity, inclusion, cross cultural communication,   and best practices towards  changing  health and social  barriers.

For over a decade Michelle Smith has recognized the importance of cross cultural communication in the delivery  of her care as a Nurse. She understands that with out fully understanding the diversity of her patients  the effectiveness of her care loses impact.   Low  health and social  literacy is prevalent across all cultures even for  individuals that are home grown Canadians.

We  offer  cross cultural communication and diversity training workshops designed to help your organization evolve and adapt to the changing complexities of our community.

We work jointly with our clients to assess the gaps and identify the opportunities that drive their organizational performance. Our approach goes beyond  benchmarks; the Organizational Advocate works with you to increase the health and social literacy of your organization. We focus on the cultural diversity needed to execute  your mission statements, by doing this  It allows  your team to understand where they need to improve.

The Core Concepts of Our Program
  • Everyone has a culture – Canadians struggle to understand their own culture which leads to difficulties in learning effectively about cultural difference.
  • Cultural diversity in the workplace
  • The culture of western medicine in Canada is a highly specific professional culture with a style of communication that is often hard for outsiders   to understand.
  • Successful health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment depends on more than a casual awareness of culture-bound  beliefs.
  • Healthcare  and Social work professionals need training in specific communication skills to increase their effectiveness in cross-cultural service
  • Awareness about how cultural barriers contribute to low health and social  literacy

WHO MICHELLE TRAINS:
  •  Individuals
  •  Non-profit Organizations
  • Charities
  •  Health Organizations
  • Multiple leaders at larger events (keynotes, workshops, etc).

Our tailored workshops bring teams together to jointly develop focused action plans.
The key to achieving both of these outcomes is to craft your communication strategy – whether internal or external – with an understanding of how cultural differences shape the ways in which your words are received and interpreted.

Social purpose organizations have an incredible opportunity to leverage the power of voice. In partnerships we  put issues on the table, support and empower individuals and communities, advance causes, educate the public, and influence policymakers.

We are passionate about always doing the right thing for our clients, our people and our communities.
