MICHELLE SMITH

MY JOURNEY

IS

 My
STRENGTH

"I Believe that everyone deserves the right care and the right knowledge, lack of knowledge is the worst  disease" Michelle Smith/JA Nursing

" Obstacles are what you see when you take your eye off the goal."
Chris Burke

Born in Toronto,  Michelle  Smith  is an award-winning Nurse, HealthCare and  Social Advocate  and  Mother of two.  In  1994   her whole life would change for ever.  Pregnant at 17 years old, she agonized over what to do for weeks. Finally choosing to courageously carry her baby to term was a choice that would make her into the Women that she is today.  Although faced with adversity her dream was to become a Nurse.  Michelle, started George Brown College's  Pre- health program with her 5 month old daughter Jessica by her side.  The challenges of  parenting independently was apparent however, Michelle continued to pursue her dreams even though she was faced with the challenge of being a Mother again at the age of 23,  adding  her Son Anthony to her team the odds of breaking the cycle of poverty seemed almost impossible.  But his did not stop her from pursuing her journey  towards her career path  and  dispelling  the myths associated with being a teenage " Single Mother".  Today Michelle Smith is a Registered Member of The College of Nurses Of Ontario in good standing since 2002, Holding a Licence as A Registered Practical Nurse.  But little did she know, that her life experiences   would catapult her into the inspirational speaker that she is today.

In  December 2002, I lost my sister to Breast Cancer, she was 36 years old, survived by her husband, 6 children, Parents and of course me, her baby   Sister. I felt as if the career that I worked so hard to be in,  was the same profession that didn't work hard  enough to save her life. My journey began December, 5 2002  when My sister died  of Cancer in a Toronto's East End hospital "I felt  like the system failed Us"  What could I do ?

There's always hope if you keep pushing forward. What's a tragedy today won't be a tragedy tomorrow.

In 2011,  JA Smith Consulting and Nursing Services,  was  founded with  the initials of my children's names  Jessica and Anthony. "  I initially started my organization as a independent mobile paramedical examiner for various insurance companies. However after doing this for sometime  I saw a common problem;  The lack of knowledge for most individuals regarding their health.  I believe that everyone regardless of race, culture, and  social status,  should have access to a Health and Social Advocate".  It became apparent, that the issue was not our healthcare or social system but rather a complicated system that required the navigation expertise of someone like myself who works within both systems.  This reality became the vision for  JA Nursing We Care Inc.  an  Non- Profit   Organization that focuses on community wellness  through various programs and partnerships.
